You want to succeed. The International Diploma Programs (IDPs) at the University of California Berkeley Extension can provide you with the techniques, training, and confidence success demands. The key to your goal is learning to apply the most current business theories in a real-world setting. While M.B.A. programs provide you with the theoretical knowledge you need and typically take two years to complete, an IDP at UC Berkeley Extension gives you the practical tools, knowledge, and experience you need to excel in an intensive four-month format.

The IDPs were created more than 10 years ago to meet a growing demand for business professionals who could put theory into practice. Today, IDPs remain unique by providing a balance of rigorous academic instruction and hands-on, practical training in the most critical areas of business: business administration, finance, international business, marketing, and project management. In an IDP, you learn methods, concepts, and tools to use in any business situation.

An IDP also offers you nearly twice as many class hours as comparable certificate programs. The intensive, daytime structure features more than 210 hours of instruction that include:

  • case studies drawn from current events and instructor experience
  • interactive class sessions that use PowerPoint, Excel, and other business-specific computer software
  • problem-solving exercises
  • leadership and entrepreneurial training
  • computer simulations
  • group projects
  • presentation skills
  • a capstone course to integrate class lessons
  • lectures, seminars, or workshops led by Bay Area entrepreneurs

At UC Berkeley Extension, our goal is to help you make the most of your experience. After completing an IDP, qualified students can put their insights and experience to immediate use in our Internship Program. This unpaid work opportunity at one of many Bay Area companies will give you a competitive edge whether you apply for an M.B.A. program, continue your present career, or seek new career opportunities.

For the most extensive, in-depth study, we offer the year-long Berkeley Management and Business Track: a core program in business administration or international business; a specialized program in finance, marketing, or project management; and an unpaid internship. This powerful combination provides you with the academic background and real-world experience you need to be a true leader in your field.

World-Class Students
IDP participants come from more than 35 different countries. This diverse student population means that you interact with fellow professionals from around the world, comparing ideas, sharing lessons, and building a network of contacts that will serve you well in your future. Our students are

  • an average of 27 years old
  • young professionals interested in quickly obtaining intensive, practical training in their field
  • experienced managers who need to update their skills in a new field due to a job change or promotion
  • recent university graduates preparing to attend an M.B.A. program in the U.S. or their home country
  • employees in a family-owned business planning to take on additional management responsibilities

World-Class Instructors
The IDPs are taught by working professionals, so you learn the most up-to-date business practices used in your field today. Our instructors have an average of 20 years' experience in the business world, have owned and operated their own companies, and provide business consulting for multinational enterprises. Their personal insights ensure that classes remain meaningful long after you complete your program.

A World-Class Community
The IDPs are held at the UC Berkeley Extension International Center (BEIC) in Berkeley. Berkeley is a thriving city encompassing the UC Berkeley campus, and just one part of the larger community known as the San Francisco Bay Area. The entire Bay Area is home to innovative business leaders and the world's most creative minds in emerging technologies?Google, Ask Jeeves, Levi's, Gap, Siemens, Sun Microsystems, Dolby Laboratories, Charles Schwab, and Genentech, to name just a few. Q. What is UC Berkeley Extension?
A. UC Berkeley Extension is the continuing education division of the University of California , Berkeley . For more than 100 years, it has been dedicated to meeting the professional development and personal growth needs of adult learners who do not wish to enroll in a standard University degree-granting program. UC Berkeley Extension is one of the largest and most respected institutions of its kind in the world.

Q. How long have the International Diploma Programs been in existence?
A. International Diploma Programs at UC Berkeley Extension are among the oldest such programs in the United States . Our first International Diploma Program was offered in 1991. Now these programs, known and respected throughout the world, enroll more than 200 students per term.

Q. What will be my approximate class schedule?
A. While each program has a somewhat different schedule, most students take approximately 18 to 21 hours of classes per week. Class preparation may take about 2 hours for each hour of class. Most programs also provide additional seminars or workshops and one or more field trips that add value to your educational experience.

Q. May I choose elective classes?
A. Most International Diploma Programs require a prescribed course of study. Individual classes have been carefully selected to comprise a well-rounded program. A benefit of this prescribed course of study is that you quickly become part of a cohort, or group of students, who work together and get to know each other well.

Q. What official records of my diploma program participation and grades will I receive?
A. The UC Berkeley Extension Student Services Department maintains official records of student enrollments and grades. Shortly after the end of each of your classes, they send you a confidential, official report of your class grade. Upon completion of your International Diploma Program, you will receive an official transcript showing your grades in all the classes in which you were enrolled. In addition, when you successfully complete your International Diploma Program, you receive a UC Berkeley Extension certificate.
